What is UHHGPT?

With UHHGPT, UHH is offering you secure and powerful access to the generative AI ChatGPT from OpenAI as part of a pilot phase. For UHH users, UHHGPT access is only available via the page https://uhhgpt.uni-hamburg.de.

UHHGPT can be used by all UHH students and staff for study, teaching, research and official duties. Access is via the university user ID (B-ID) and the UHH's secure authentication systems.

Only the requests to ChatGPT, the so-called prompts, are sent to OpenAI.

How can I use UHHGPT?

To use UHHGPT as a member of the UHH, please first book access via the RRZ-Serviceportal (Important: The RRZ service portal is only accessible in the UHH network or via VPN!):

Why do I have to log in?

The login with the B-ID is only used as access authorisation. No personal registration with ChatGPT is required. The UHH login data will not be passed on to ChatGPT.

Will personal data be forwarded to ChatGPT?

No, only your input (prompt) is forwarded to the ChatGPT API, ChatGPT does not receive your B-identifier or your IP address, the UHHGPT server takes over the mediation. The use is anonymous. It is therefore not possible to save chat histories in a user account.

Is data stored, monitored or analysed?

No, no data is stored, checked or analysed. The input (prompt) is not used to train the AI at ChatGPT, This is prevented by a corresponding default setting in the API.

The following data is collected in anonymised form for the usage analysis: Number of logins by "students" and "employees", the number of enquiries made in the respective group per day and the language used for the web interface.

Are there any costs associated with its use?

The costs incurred for the use of ChatGPT are currently covered centrally by the UHH. The costs are calculated based on the number of words in the entries (prompts) and responses. ChatGPT calculates the costs per 1,000 tokens, tokens are parts of words, 1,000 tokens correspond to approximately 750 words. 1,000 tokens cost between 1ct and 12ct. So use short, concise requests (prompts)!

Which model of ChatGPT does UHHGPT use?

You have the choice between GPT 4 omni mini and GPT 4 omni.
GPT omni mini contains content up to October 2023, requests only cost around 20% of the price of GPT 4 omni. For many requests GPT 4 omni mini is completely sufficient.
GPT 4 omni was presented by OpenAI in mid-May 2024. It takes content up to October 2023 into account, has very fast response times and many other improvements, but requests cost but also cost significantly more compared to GPT 4 omni mini.

What can I use UHHGPT for?

UHHGPT provides access to a chat bot, you ask a question and receive an answer from the AI and can start a communication with further queries. There are already suggestions for enquiries (prompts) in the various areas of UHHGPT. Please note, however, that no personal or sensitive data are included in your requests.

Typical use cases could be idea generation, text optimisation or support in the creation of software source code.

Are there rules for use?

Yes, the two most important rules:
It is not permitted to use personal data in the input (prompt).
It is not permitted to use copyrighted works in the input (prompt).
The use of UHHGPT is only permitted within the scope of studies or official duties.

Are there any recommendations for using the results?

The responses to your enquiry to ChatGPT may contain outdated, incorrect and fictitious (hallucination) information. It is the user's responsibility to check the results for accuracy (source criticism), direct use of the results is strongly discouraged. Do not make decisions based solely on the results of generative AI. Familiarise yourself with the general functioning of generative AI, its advantages, disadvantages and risks.

What requirements apply to examinations and assignments? Do I have to label content created with UHHGPT?

The requirements of the examination regulations and good scientific practice apply. Content that was not created by you must be labelled (citation guidelines). Taking over content without labelling may constitute attempted cheating or academic misconduct and may result in appropriate consequences. Generative AI can only serve as an helpful tool.

UHHGPT is only offered in a pilot phase, why?

During the pilot phase, UHH will initially gather experience in the use of ChatGPT. In particular, the volume of use and the resulting costs will be monitored. Depending on how costs develop, UHH reserves the right to restrict the service. The offer in the field of AI and the legal regulations are also constantly evolving, meaning that adjustments may have to be made. If ongoing test cases by the data protection authorities come to the conclusion that the offerings on the market are not lawful, UHH must also react immediately.
